Head Coach
The Head Coaches’ main responsibility is to prepare and deliver the Girls on the Run curriculum for the 12-week season. Throughout the lessons the coach will serve as a role model by having a healthy lifestyle and positive attitude. Most importantly, the Head Coach will have fun with the girls and encourage positive behaviors. Based on our Curriculum structure and creating an environment that allows girl participants to be fully engaged, we have found that female coaches are most effective.
Major responsibilities include: preparing, organizing, and supervising the weekly lessons; leading the program participants through each lesson; serving as a role model and mentor; coaching program participants on proper stretching, running form, hydration and sports nutrition; attending a community running race with program participants and other volunteers; attending 2 coaches meetings with the Director during the season; interacting with parents of program participants; planning and coordinating the end of season banquet, and understanding and believing in the mission of the organization and acting as a spokesperson for the program.
Goals:
- Prepare delivery of Girls on the Run lessons for each session
- Serve as a role model for the girls by being on time, listening attentively, by having a positive demeanor and outlook, and by leading a healthy lifestyle
- To encourage girls as they play games and participate in activities
- To coach the girls on proper stretching, running form and hydration
- To mediate disputes amongst girls in an immediate and respectful manner
- To attend end of the season 5K runs and encourage the girls participation
- Attend regularly scheduled coaches’ meetings
- Recruit running buddies for your girls and coordinate their race needs
- To administer the pre and post test surveys with the girls
- Return all coaching materials as received in a timely manner
- To be yourself and have fun!
Commitment:
- Availability twice a week for 12 weeks for 1.5 hours (between 2-5pm)
- Allow time for lesson preparation
- Must attend end of the season 5K run and cheer!
Requirements:
- Adult CPR & First Aid certification (we provide this free of charge to our coaches).
- MUST attend our 6-hour training session with GOTR staff.
- Completed application and non-compete form and successful background check.
- A strong desire to work in the field of girl development.
- Experience working with youth.
- Excellent communication skills.
- The ability to be flexible and improvise when needed.
- To inspire and motivate others to believe in the Girls on the Run mission.
- High organizational skills.
- The capacity to work in a partnership with a co-coach and/or assistant coaches.
- Believe and support the mission of Girls on the Run.
- Attendance at coaches meetings and end of the season celebration
- Must be 21 years or older.
- Must be female.
EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will have the following experiences:
- Has worked directly with girls ages 8-11 in a girl-positive environment.
- Has experience as a runner/walker either recreationally or competitively.
- Has volunteered in direct service organizations.
- Has awareness of the common and different needs of girls.

Assistant Coach:
The Assistant Coaches’ main responsibility is to serve as an encourager, cheerleader and *superstar* supporter during workouts and 5K runs. The Head Coach will need your assistance in many of the activities and workouts.
Goals:
- Attend at least one lesson a week on a consistent basis
- Assist with the Head Coach with setting up/breaking down various activities, games, and workouts
- Participate in games and workouts with the girls
- Serve as a role model and mentor for program participants
- Run and/or walk with girls during workouts to provide positive encouragement
- Understand and believe the Girls on the Run mission, vision, and values
- Special projects, as assigned
Commitment:
- Availability once or twice a week for 12 weeks for 1.5 hours (between 2-5pm)
- Must attend end of the season 5K run and cheer!
Requirements:
- Completed application and non-compete form and successful background check.
- A strong commitment to girls’ positive development.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Experience working with youth a plus.
- Flexibility/ability to accommodate to a changing environment.
- MUST attend our GOTR Coach Training or mini-training with staff.
- Attendance at coaches’ meetings and end of the season celebration.
- Must be 16 years or older.
- Male or female.
